Our travel ABC

A little more than a month ago we were tagged by fellow travel blogger Giulia at Travel Reportage to take part in the Travel ABC game. Thanks Giulia for picking us – it took some time but here we are!

Travel ABC” is a blog game where each blogger answers the “A to Z” questions below and then tags other 5 bloggers who will have to answer the questions and tag 5 more bloggers, and so on :)

Here is our ABC

A: Age you went on your first international trip

Romana: It was late (I’m not counting the few times I crossed the border from Portugal and went on short trips to Spain when I was in college). I was already 23 when I went on my first REAL trip abroad. I went to Florence with my brother and cousin. Travelling to Italy was a dream since I was a child. I could never image I would end up marring an Italian and living in Italy one day :)

Emanuele: I think I was 9. I went on a trip to Germany with my parents. My father tells me I was frustrated because all the kids spoke a ‘strange’ language and I couldn’t understand what they said.

B: Best (foreign) beer you’ve had and where

Romana: Guinness, although it’s an acquired taste. In fact, it took me some time before I started to appreciate, and then love, the black stuff.

Emanuele: My favourite beer is Bintang! Not because it tastes better than other beers, but because it reminds me of Bali, which was one of the happiest parts of our around the world trip.

C: Cuisine (favorite)

Romana: The list is so long… where to start from? I love Portuguese food of course, but I also love all Mediterranean flavors,  I love a good plate of pasta or a good risotto, plus I love Indian food, Thai food, Vietnamese food, Chinese food, Moroccan food and I can go on and on… I guess I can’t really pick a cuisine. I love food! FULL STOP!

Emanuele: I’m like Romana, I just love food, but if I have to pick, I’ll say Indian and Thai cuisine … Oh and I NEED to have a pizza or a parmigiana every now and then.

D: Destinations, favorite, least favorite and why

Romana & Emanuele: We’re getting this question all the time. The world is so big and diverse, why picking one place when there are so many beautiful ones? Anyway, I guess it’s no secret to our readers and friends that Bali was a very special place for us. Least favorite? We have to say Australia. Nothing to do with the country itself, but after spending more than 6 months in Asia, we were just not ready to go back to the western world.

E: Event you experienced abroad that made you say “wow”

Romana: India was full of wow moments – both good and bad sort of wows.

Emanuele: The Sahara desert. What a magical place to be at sunrise!

F: Favorite mode of transportation

Romana: When we were travelling I really enjoyed exploring cities and villages on foot. It allowed us to connect with people around, get a good feel of the place and put our senses to work (especially in Asia). I also enjoyed our train trips in India and tuk-tuks in Asia were real fun.

Humm I guess I’m not good picking a favorite :)

Emanuele: Train. I really enjoyed the 48h train trip from Delhi to Kochi, in Kerala, India. But I also liked travelling on a motorbike, like we did in Asia, it gave me a sense of freedom. In the future I want to take more motorbike trips!

G: Greatest feeling while traveling

Romana: The feeling of freedom. I loved when we boarded the plain in Dublin and left everything behind to travel around the world.

Emanuele: I can still remember my happiness while riding a motorbike around Bali, driving among rice fields, temples and picturesque villages.

H: Hottest place you’ve traveled to

Romana & Emanuele: Antalya in the south of Turkey. So hot and humid that we felt like we were in a sort of open-air sauna.

I: Incredible service you’ve experienced and where

Romana & Emanuele: The management of the Blue Lagoon Resort, in Fiji, gave us a luxury seafront villa for two nights with no extra cost because it was our second wedding anniversary. Few things can beat that!

J: Journey that took the longest

Romana & Emanuele: a 48 hours train ride from Delhi to Kochi in India.

K: Keepsake from your travels

Romana & Emanuele: a Turkish talisman against the evil-eye we bought in Istanbul. We also brought it with us on our round the world trip. The talisman, which is called Nazar, is currently on the wall of our living room.

L: Let-down sight, why and where

Romana & Emanuele: the Bokor Hill station, including the jungle trek in Kampot, Cambodia. A bit tiring and rather uninteresting…

M: Moment where you fell in love with travel

Romana: When I travelled to Italy on my first trip abroad.

Emanuele: When I found out about low cost airlines :)

N: Nicest hotel you’ve stayed in

Romana & Emanuele: Blue Lagoon Resort in Fiji and Travellers Cave Hotel in Goreme, Turkey.

O: Obsession—what are you obsessed with taking pictures of while traveling?

Romana & Emanuele: People, traditions, food.

P: Passport stamps, how many and from where?

Romana & Emanuele: Many but still far from enough :)

Q: Quirkiest attraction you’ve visited and where

Romana & Emanuele: That’s hard! We can’t think of anything that quirky that should be mentioned here.

R: Recommended sight, event or experience

Romana & Emanuele: Everyone should go to India at least once in life :)

S: Splurge; something you have no problem forking over money for while traveling

Romana & Emanuele: Cheese & wine (but only after we’ve been on the road for months)… oh, and Emanuele was seen buying a very expensive Canon lens in Phnom Penh once!

T: Touristy thing you’ve done

Romana & Emanuele: Visiting the Taj Mahal, seeing the sunrise at Angkor Wat,  and many, many more!

U: Unforgettable travel memory?

Romana: Our hot air baloon trip at sunrise in Cappadocia.

Emanuele: Riding a camel in the Sahara at sunrise.

V: Visas, how many and for where?

Romana & Emanuele: like the passport stamps, many, but still far from enough.

W: Wine, best glass of wine while traveling and where?

Romana & Emanuele: being Italian and Portuguese we tend to drink more wine at home than while travelling, however we drank some good Shiraz in Australia.

X: eXcellent view and from where?

Romana: The view from our seafront villa at Blue Lagoon, in Fiji (See the picture above).

Emanuele: Mount Etna from the airplane’s window, just before landing in Catania, Sicily.

Y: Years spent traveling?

Romana & Emanuele: Our around the world trip lasted about 8 1/2 months, but we are impatient to start travelling again.

Z: Zealous sports fans and where?

Romana & Emanuele: While we’re no big sport followers, we got to enjoy a series of Cambodian kickboxing matches one afternoon in Phnom Penh.

  1. Thanks Romana for including me in the game, hope I can create as interesting ABC’s as you did! ps. That’s a great action shot of the Cambodian kick boxing.

  2. Indeed, almost as much fun to read your ABC’s as it was following your adventures throughout last year. Let’s hope 2012 brings more travel opportunities for both of us.

    • Thanks Ryan. We too enjoyed following your adventures. I think 2012 will be a quiet year for us in terms of traveling as we have a baby on the way and we are slowly getting back on our feet again. But we can’t wait to get back on the road :)
