I am so glad you are okay, Alison! I found a device that I’ve purchased for everyone in my family called a de-choker. God willing, we’ll never have to use it, but if someone is home alone, I want them to have a little extra chance to survive!

I found this because I choked while eating an enchilada alone in my home today. I heard neighbors so I scrambled outside and fell down on my porch in a panic then managed to vomit and clear the blockage. All I could think was “I don’t want to die alone in my living room” and made moves to get outside as quickly as possible. I’m so lucky to be alive. Choking is absolutely terrifying! I experienced a similar incident at work a little over a year ago which was a teeny bit less terrifying because there were people in the office with me who immediately sprung into action.
Thank you for sharing your story. I’ll be reading and studying up on the mayo clinic’s recommendations since this has now happened to me twice.

I’m so glad you’re alright, Denise. It’s terrifying, isn’t it? I’m bothered as much by the fact that I tried to hide as I am that I choked.

I did exactly what you did and tried to hide it. I’m an R.N. I could neither inhale nor exhale..all I could do was wheeze and muster up a weak cough. I couldnt speak. I kept trying to force a harder cough.
Finally, that worked. Freaked my husband out. Now, I’m exhausted. By the way, I choked on a piece of potatoe. I’m quick to help others in need, but ashamed to require help for myself.

I used to take a drug that always kicked my but and then my youngest son told me I couldnt see his 2 sons anymore if I didnt quit. I wanted my grandsons more so I gave up the drug for them. I have been quit for well over a year but a couple of close women I know tell my son I am still taking drugs, when I am tired from painting the house or baby sitting and so on so about a mo. ago they, my son and his family and the 2 gossiper came to visit. We were having a great time till I got choked on a big bite of pizza! I was coughing and really trying to hack it up and I tried to make myself throw up. Didnt work. I was getting really tired and hot so I sat in my chair and I could feel myself going to sleep… my son suggest I go lay down before someone started thinking I was passing out from being high. 🙁 I was so tired I barely made it to my bedroom. All nite I coughed and threw up what little drop of water I sipped because my mouth was so dry. My husband told me that the 2 gossipers plus one said that I was hi even though my husband told them I wasn’t. The extra gossiper has taken a lot of nursing school, but she was clueless. God kept me alive for his Glory. The extra gossiper keeps children in her home and I think she needs to know a lot more about choking… for the toddlers she watches. Thank you again for the information and for caring about people.

I fully get it, Patricia. Have you seen the new device you can purchase that uses suction to pull lodged food out? It’s supposed to be easy to administer by yourself if needed!

I live alone and have had several near death experiences. Last time I cracked a rib trying to do the Heimlich on myself. I am attending a consultant but he does not seem to understand the absolute terror I feel when this occurs. I am terrified of this happening again and I won’t survive.
